This handbook has been created to help you and your student be successful at Tomasita Elementary School.

If your student is going to be absent from school, it is necessary for the student's family to call and leave a message on the attendance school line:

  • Leave student's name, your name, teacher name, and reason for absence.

If we do not receive notification, the absence is recorded as unexcused. Continued absences will be in violation of the New Mexico Compulsory Attendance Law, which may result in referral to the Court Liaison.

Excused Absences

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with proper notification:

  • Illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan)
  • Limited family emergencies
  • Family deaths
  • Medical, health or legal appointments
  • Suspensions
  • Religious commitments

Cell Phones / Personal Electronic Devices

All cell phones must be turned off!!

They are to remain in backpacks during the school day. If you are caught using or playing with the cell phone, it will be taken away. A parent must meet with administration to pick up the phone.

Dress Code

Tomasita Elementary School is a Uniform school and the the Dress Code is as follows:


  • Must have collars, solid colors w/o logos
  • Polo shirts, buttoned dress shirts/blouses. 
  • If longer than fingertips (un-tucked) then they need to be tucked in.
  • Turtlenecks, long sleeves, short sleeves (no sleeveless)
  • Any solid color


  • Pants, Capri pants, shorts, skirts (no jean skirts) shorts, overalls
  • (Straps buttoned), and plain jeans
  • No designs, logos, writing or prints
  • Colors:  black, navy, tan/khaki, gray, and jeans
  • No sweats, leggings, athletic shorts or jogging suits


  • Jackets that are worn outside are exempt from the uniform dress code
  • Sweaters and sweatshirts, whether pullover, button up, or zipper (if worn inside the building) must be in solid color, without logos, designs or prints

Special Note

  • Shirts should be tucked in.
  • Belts of appropriate length are recommended.
  • No sagging.  No pocket/wallet chains.
  • Shorts, skirts, and short length must range from fingertip above the knee to 3” below the knee.
  • Students must be in uniform dress code at all times. This includes “Special days” such as field trips, picture days and Play Day.

Attire and presentation cannot cause interruption to learning.

~No visible tattoos or body piercing (except ears)

Please note: All pants must be plain, not baggy without any designs, logos, writing, bling or prints. Shorts must be a minimum of fingertip length. No baggy shorts or extremely short shorts. The staff will send home notices for any violation.

Pride Day is every Friday

On Pride Day ~Students may wear plain jeans with a Tomasita pride-colored uniform shirt (purple or turquoise) or any Tomasita or Manzano t-shirt or jersey.


The administration will make the final decision regarding appropriateness of dress. All clothing must conform to the APS Policy regarding dress code.
